from the top of Mount Pisgah
When I look out over these ancient mountains I wonder how they looked hundreds, thousands of years ago. I wonder what creatures roamed among these trees, what souls called this land home.
a hike in the fall
Here in the mountains the weather is cool, the air alive and crisp, the leaves are changing colors, and it’s time to be outside. A roof over your head when the sky’s that amazing blue and the sun is shining and warm on your skin is a downright sin! Even grey days are hard to miss. Every chance I get I’m out in the woods, on a trail, driving a country road, soaking up the autumn bliss, watching the colors change before my eyes. Here are some photos I’ve snapped on recent hikes.
Off the way from Big Glassy Mountain trail. This picture makes me feel like Bambi’s just around the corner.
in the age of materialism
Want want want. I want want want. These material things, I know they’ll eventually fall away– but I think as long as we don’t get too caught up in the “want want want” and know that these things aren’t the end all be all, then there’s nothing wrong with a little indulgence now and then. The material world’s an undeniable part of human existence and I say we should just have fun with it– because pushing against the undeniable is just as foolish and futile as the other extreme. Like most things in life, it’s all about balance. That said, here’s what I find myself currently lusting after….
An Alice and Wonderland doorknob! Looove it. I wanna walk out a door with this handle everyday.
Il Nostro Caro Angelo by Lucio Battisti on vinyl. I have the cassette tape but it’s original (’73) and wearing out…
A new knife set! Mine is pretty pathetic– with missing knives, dull knives, & knives that probably don’t even belong! And with all the cooking I do, surely I’ll talk myself into justifying this purchase soon… (hopefully!)
I hadn’t worn nail polish in years, but just recently I finally broke down and bought a bottle (a vegan brand) — in what else, hot pink. Now I want every color of the rainbow, and then some.
What are you lusting after?
What if you see God today?
It’s true, driving on the back roads through the Bible Belt there’s no shortage of churches scattering the periphery. At times laughable, occasionally inspirational, their signs show us a hint of the ideologies preached about inside. One day while driving recently there was one in front of me: read more…
Pygmy Jerboa
I happened across an article the other night about some of the tiniest mammals in the world. One of them I’d never heard of caught my eye. It didn’t look like any animal I’d ever seen before. It was called a Pygmy Jerboa, and chances are the name is as foreign to you as it was to me. I have this great little animal encyclopedia so I went straight to it to see if I could find this strange creature there, and sure enough, there he was!
Here, let me introduce you…
