Just some snapshots I took during an impromptu day trip visit to a former mountainside mine in western North Carolina near where I live (outside of Asheville).
Like shining gemstones the cave walls seemed to sing. Oh the colors…
To me, this place was an outdoor cathedral.

I had so much fun admiring the beauty and playing in the warm spring sun.
I was in love with the sunbathing lizards. They sat there quite calmly and watched me while I inched closer and closer to get their picture.
Some views on the drive up:
And of course there’s no better way to end the day than with a local IPA–and this particular small town brewery had homemade tarragon pickles to snack on too, yum!
Tell me, have you ever been to a spot in the great outdoors where you too felt so touched by its magic that it became an outdoor cathedral for you? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!
So neat! I wonder what they used to mine in there. The rock formations are truly amazing. Love the ‘zards! And your skirt! Beautiful drive too.
Ok so it’s pretty touristy to say but Lake Tahoe was like an outdoor cathedral to me. One of the most gorgeous places on earth! And the western NC mountains would definitely be considered “hills” there haha
I don’t remember all the things it said they mined for, but I do remember that one of them was this really soft rock (forget what it’s called) that they used in this cleaner called “bon ami” which I THINK is like a more eco-friendly version of something like “comet”!
aren’t the ‘zards so CUTE!? haha thanks I got that skirt at a thrift store, and it’s handmade too!
oh cool I have never been to Lake Tahoe, but I’d love to go someday! and yes after living in Colorado I can’t help but to look at these little mountains here as hills!
Very pretty, will have to visit this place when i am out that way this summer.
My cathedral has to be Glacier National Park and the Going to the Sun Highway, or the Beartooth Higway driving from Red Lodge,MT to Yellowstone Park.Takes your breath away!
I have never been to Glacier National Park but I hope to go someday. I’ve never heard of Going to the Sun Highway, but what a neat name. I HAVE been on Beartooth Highway, and wow! Yes, it’s soo beautiful. That’s the road from which I spotted some Grizzly bears!
Gorgeous pics, as usual! You find the coolest places! Hmm, what would I pick as my outdoor cathedral? So many come to mind–one of my favorites would have to be the place we stayed in Tuscany when you were not even 2–we rented this awesome old, old farmhouse & it was in a glorious middle of nowhere–the views were amazing, the peace, the quiet, the antiquity of the surroundings–loved to sit outside for our meals–a special time that will always live inside me!
what neat memories : )
the outdoor cathedral, that struck me the most was standing out on deck in the middle of the Atlantic ocean at night.Just the stars as far as you could see.
wow that sounds amazing
